Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are injectable substances that are used to add volume and fullness to different areas of the face, hands, and other parts of the body. They are made up of a gel-like substance that is injected beneath the skin to smooth out wrinkles, lines, and creases, and to enhance facial features.

The most common types of dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a type of carbohydrate molecule that occurs naturally in the human body. It is found in high concentrations in connective tissues, such as skin, joints, and eyes. Hyaluronic acid is known for its ability to retain moisture and improve elasticity, making it a common ingredient in skin care products.  Other types of dermal fillers are made from synthetic materials, such as polylactic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite.  Dermal fillers can be used to:

  • Smooth out wrinkles, lines, and creases around the mouth, nose, and forehead.

  • Add volume and fullness to the cheeks, lips, and under-eye area.

  • Enhance facial features, such as the jawline, chin, and nose.

  • Improve the appearance of scars and other imperfections.

How are dermal fillers done?

The procedure for dermal fillers typically takes less than an hour and involves the injection of the filler into the targeted area using a very fine needle or cannula. The patient is typically numbed with topical anesthetic or small nerve blocks to make the area comfortable during the treatment.

The results of dermal fillers are usually visible immediately and can last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the type of filler used and the area treated.

Patients may need to undergo repeat treatments to maintain their desired results.

Benefits

  1. Reduce wrinkles and fine lines: Dermal fillers can help to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines on the face, especially around the eyes, mouth, and forehead.

  2. Restore volume: As we age, we naturally lose volume in our face, which can make us look tired or gaunt. Dermal fillers can help to restore lost volume and add fullness to the cheeks, lips, and other areas.

  3. Enhance facial features: Dermal fillers can be used to enhance and define certain facial features, such as the lips or cheekbones.

  4. Quick and easy: Dermal filler treatments are generally quick and easy, with little downtime or recovery required.

  5. Long-lasting: Depending on the type of filler used, the results of dermal fillers can last from several months to a year or more.

  6. Minimal side effects: Dermal fillers are generally safe and have minimal side effects, such as temporary swelling or bruising at the injection site.
